Domain Names

domainnames.jpgA domain name is basically the address or URL of a website. For example, GetMyHomesValue.com is not just our company name, but our domain name as well. It is what you type into the address bar of your Internet browser in order to access our website.

Each domain name must be unique and relatively easy to remember (this gets harder as more and more domain names are bought and used). In order to pull in search engine traffic, the domain name should be keyword focused. For example, if you are a real estate professional in Philadelphia think about the terms people would search for when looking for real estate in Philadelphia. They’d probably type something like “Real estate in Philadelphia,” “Philadelphia real estate agent,” or even real estate agents in Philly.

It would therefore make sense to purchase a domain name such as www.PhillyRealEstate.com. You can also buy a domain name for your name as well: www.JohnDoe.com. You can actually purchase a domain name for your RemarkableAgents.com website for about $15/year at domain.remarkableagents.com. (If you’d like help with purchasing a domain, or have more questions, please contact your Account Manager).

Domain names are cheaper than most people realize, so you can afford a few. And having your own domain name to list on a business card looks a lot more professional than having your site hosted (at a site like Yahoo GeoCities, for example).

Search engines tend to give more credibility to domain names that have keywords in them than hosted sites. Also, people will often do a search RIGHT in the address bar of their Internet browser. For example, if they’re looking for yard signs, they may just type “yard signs” or “yardsigns.com” into the address bar, just to find a yard sign site asap. So by sticking with a general keyword filled domain name gives you a greater chance of people finding your site just by typing it directly into the address bar.
